Introducing… Total Performance

24 03 2009

Hello SportsPage!

My name is Robert Word and I am a Sports Performance coach in Central Virginia who is very familiar with the recruiting process and what it takes to make it to the next level. Years ago I was just like you, wondering what I needed to do to get noticed. What did I need to do to stand out from the crowd? Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’ve done your homework and you realize that you can’t go about the recruiting process alone.

My career started in Knoxville, TN, where I was a left-handed first baseman that was virtually overlooked by every college in the country. I went to EVERY recruiting baseball camp in the SEC and ACC conferences as well as sending videos and letters, but for some reason I didn’t really pique the interest of most colleges.

Fortunately, the University of Virginia gave me an invited walk-on slot, and I had an opportunity to hone my skills on a greater level in the ACC conference. After countless hours in the gym and the batting cage (and earning a scholarship at UVA, woo!), I was drafted in the 10th round by the Florida Marlins in 2002 as a junior in college.

How did I do that in 3 short years? I focused all my efforts and abilities towards becoming the best I could be, and made myself look more appealing to both college coaches and professional scouts by training my butt off in the weight room. There is so much more to strength and conditioning than lifting heavy things or just running to get faster. Hopefully throughout my upcoming posts I can educate you on not only what to look for in a good trainer (if you have or are thinking of getting one), but also what to do if you’re going to design your own programs.

I love to answer questions and if you have a topic that you’d like to learn more about, feel free to email me or send me a message on the site at any time.

Thanks for reading!
