D1? D2? D3? Where do I belong?

14 04 2009

I understand that many athletes have the goal of playing Division I athletics. That is great. But should we discount all of the other academic institutions out there because they do not play at the Division I level? Of course not. We’ll talk more about this topic in the future, but in the meantime, here is a news flash to chew on…

You are [very, very likely] not going to play professional sports! That sounds harsh doesn’t it? Sorry about that, but the statistics are that less than 0.5% of high school athletes will ever play professionally. To put this into perspective, it means that out of 1,000 athletes, only 5 will play professionally. That’s great for those 5, but not so great for the rest. The other 995 of you would be wise to hit the books and find yourselves the best fit for you–academically, athletically, and socially.

When you start your recruiting process, be open minded about all divisions and figure out what kind of college experience you want. As a former Division I baseball player (and non professional baseball player) I can tell you firsthand that my degree (BBA, The College of William & Mary, 2001) is much more important than my ability to turn a double play.

Use SportsPage to begin your school search, and contact me if you have any questions about putting together your recruiting video. Good luck!
